Iran Maintains Caution as Nuclear Talks with US Continue

Iran and the United States have agreed to hold another round of nuclear negotiations next week, with both sides describing recent discussions as "serious" yet facing lingering disagreements. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi emphasized "extreme cautiousness" about the outcome, despite acknowledging "determination" from both parties to resolve the decade-long stalemate.

During their third round of indirect talks in Muscat, mediated by Oman, negotiators focused on technical details for a potential agreement. Araqchi revealed that written exchanges helped clarify positions, while U.S. officials called the dialogue "positive and productive." Both delegations will return to their capitals for review before reconvening, with Oman expected to announce the venue for a May 3 meeting.

The talks aim to rebuild trust in Iran's nuclear program in exchange for sanctions relief, reviving the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) abandoned by the U.S. in 2018. While experts reportedly made progress on frameworks during parallel discussions, an Iranian official described the process as "difficult and complicated."

Oman continues to play a pivotal mediation role, hosting key meetings since April to narrow divides. U.S. President Donald Trump recently reiterated optimism for a deal but warned of military action if diplomacy fails. Observers suggest that persistent technical and political hurdles could delay a breakthrough.
