Serbia’s New Leadership: Endocrinologist Djuro Macut Nominated as Prime Minister

Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic nominated Dr. Djuro Macut, a 62-year-old endocrinologist and academic, as the country's new prime minister on Sunday. Macut, a respected professor at the University of Belgrade’s Faculty of Medicine and deputy director of a leading clinical center, marks a shift in leadership following the resignation of predecessor Milos Vucevic earlier this year.

The nomination awaits parliamentary approval, with a deadline of April 18 for forming a new government. Vucic highlighted Macut’s 'dedication and competence,' positioning him as a leader capable of addressing Serbia’s socioeconomic priorities, including healthcare reforms, infrastructure upgrades, and preparations for Expo 2027 in Belgrade—an event expected to drive substantial investment.

Vucic outlined the incoming government’s dual focus: advancing Serbia’s European integration while maintaining strategic partnerships with Eastern allies. Challenges include navigating regional tensions, resolving tariff disputes with the U.S., and revitalizing foreign direct investment. Vucic stressed the need for 'patience and restraint' in maintaining stability amid geopolitical pressures.

The transition follows Vucevic’s resignation in January 2025, prompted by public scrutiny after a fatal infrastructure incident in Novi Sad in late 2024. Macut now faces the task of assembling a cabinet prepared to address Serbia’s complex domestic and international agenda.
