Houthis Claim 16th US Drone Downed Over Yemen Amid Escalating Tensions

Yemen's Houthi armed group announced Tuesday it shot down a U.S. MQ-9 drone over Marib province using a domestically manufactured missile, marking the 16th such incident since October 2023. The downing comes amid heightened regional tensions linked to the Gaza conflict and ongoing maritime security concerns in critical trade waterways.

Houthi military spokesperson Yahya Sarea stated via al-Masirah TV that the group remains committed to disrupting "Israeli navigation" in the Red Sea and Arabian Sea until Israel's military operations in Gaza cease. He also vowed continued attacks on "enemy warships," referencing U.S. naval forces stationed in the area.

This escalation follows resumed U.S. airstrikes on Houthi-held territories since March 15, aimed at protecting shipping lanes and containing the group's capacity to target maritime operations. Local reports indicate Monday's retaliatory strikes in Hajjah province resulted in two fatalities and a child's injury, drawing scrutiny over civilian impacts.

Analysts note the persistent drone interceptions highlight evolving Houthi defense capabilities, while U.S. military operations underscore the complex geopolitical stakes surrounding one of the world's busiest maritime corridors. The developments carry significant implications for regional stability and global trade flows.
