Major Earthquake Strikes Myanmar: Over 1,000 Dead as Aftershocks Rattle Region

Catastrophic Quake Claims Lives Across Myanmar, Triggers Regional Tremors

A devastating magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck central Myanmar on Friday, leaving over 1,000 people dead and thousands more injured or displaced, according to the country's military government. Rescue operations face challenges as aftershocks—including a magnitude-6.4 tremor—continue to destabilize the region.

Official reports indicate 1,002 confirmed fatalities, 2,376 injuries, and 30 individuals missing as of Saturday. The quake’s impact extended beyond Myanmar’s borders, shaking high-rise buildings in Bangkok and claiming six lives in Thailand, with 26 injured and 47 still unaccounted for.

International Aid Mobilizes Amid Crisis

Multiple countries have swiftly responded to the disaster. Teams from the Chinese mainland, Malaysia, and Russia are deploying rescue personnel, medical supplies, and equipment to assist local efforts. The scale of infrastructure damage remains unclear, particularly in remote areas of Myanmar where communication networks have been disrupted.

Seismologists warn of ongoing risks from aftershocks, urging residents to avoid unstable structures. The disaster highlights vulnerabilities in regional disaster preparedness systems, particularly in densely populated urban zones like Bangkok, where high-rise evacuations caused widespread panic.
