The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) announced Wednesday that it has regained control of Khartoum International Airport and other critical locations across the capital, marking a significant shift in the ongoing conflict with the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). The airport, held by the RSF since April 2023, was secured through coordinated operations led by SAF commander Mohamed Abdul-Rahman Al-Belawi, as reported by Al-Jazeera.
A anonymous military source confirmed to Xinhua News Agency that ground units had “fully secured” the airport. Meanwhile, SAF spokesman Nabil Abdalla stated that forces had captured Taiba Al-Hasanab camp in Jabal Awliya city, described as the RSF’s “last stronghold” in Khartoum. Abdalla noted that remaining RSF presence now consists of isolated “small pockets” to be cleared imminently.
This development follows months of escalating tensions between the rival factions, with analysts suggesting the SAF’s advances could alter the dynamics of Sudan’s security landscape. The recapture of infrastructure like the airport may also ease humanitarian access and supply chain disruptions impacting regional markets.
