Ukraine-Russia Ceasefire Deal Reached Amid US Mediation

Partial Truce Focuses on Energy Infrastructure

A U.S.-brokered agreement between Ukraine and Russia has led to a limited ceasefire, with a focus on protecting energy infrastructure, though differing interpretations from Kyiv, Moscow, and Washington raise questions about its scope and longevity.

US Announces 'Partial Ceasefire Against Energy'

The White House confirmed on Wednesday that U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy agreed to a ceasefire targeting energy facilities during a phone call. This followed Trump's earlier discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin, who reportedly endorsed the framework as a starting point for broader peace.

U.S. officials said technical teams from Washington and Kyiv will meet in Saudi Arabia to expand the ceasefire to the Black Sea region. The agreement also includes continued intelligence sharing and discussions about supplying Ukraine with Patriot missile systems.

Zelenskyy Stresses Civilians; US Stays Vague

Zelenskyy described the move as a step toward ending strikes on "energy and other civilian infrastructure," emphasizing Ukraine's readiness to comply. However, the White House statement omitted references to civilian protections, citing only energy assets. Trump separately floated the idea of U.S. ownership or management of Ukraine's nuclear plants for "protection."

Uncertain Path Ahead

While White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt reaffirmed ongoing intelligence cooperation, the lack of a unified agreement underscores challenges ahead. Analysts warn that gaps in interpretation could undermine efforts to expand the ceasefire or negotiate a lasting resolution.
