Trump Cuts $400M Funding to Columbia Over Antisemitism Concerns

The Trump administration has canceled $400 million in grants to Columbia University, citing its failure to address antisemitic harassment on campus, according to a U.S. Department of Health and Human Services statement released Friday. The decision follows a federal investigation by a Joint Task Force, which concluded the university neglected to protect Jewish students despite repeated incidents.

The task force, formed in February after President Trump signed an executive order in January to combat antisemitism in educational institutions, included representatives from the Justice Department, Education Department, and General Services Administration. Though specifics remain unclear, the funding cuts will impact portions of Columbia's $5 billion in federal grants.

Trump doubled down on the move in a social media post Tuesday, warning of further cuts to institutions permitting 'illegal protests.' Analysts suggest the decision could set a precedent for federal oversight of campus policies related to discrimination.

Columbia University has yet to issue a formal response. The move highlights growing scrutiny of how academic institutions balance free speech with protections for marginalized communities.
