UK PM Starmer Pledges $2.84B Support to Strengthen Ukraine’s Defense

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has reaffirmed the United Kingdom's strong support for Ukraine by signing a loan agreement worth 2.26 billion British pounds ($2.84 billion, 2.74 billion euros). This substantial financial commitment is aimed at enhancing Ukraine's defense capabilities amidst ongoing conflicts.

The agreement was formalized during a meeting at Downing Street, where Starmer warmly welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. The two leaders discussed the UK's unwavering determination to support Ukraine and achieve lasting peace in the region.

Starmer emphasized that Ukraine has \"full backing across the United Kingdom,\" highlighting the UK's steadfast commitment to helping Ukraine navigate its current challenges. The loan, as outlined by Ukrainian Finance Minister Serhiy Marchenko, is intended to be repaid using profits from immobilized sovereign Russian assets.

Zelenskyy expressed his gratitude for the UK's consistent support since the onset of the Russia-Ukraine conflict. In a statement on social media platform X, Zelenskyy confirmed the loan agreement, stating, \"This loan will enhance Ukraine's defense capabilities… The funds will be directed toward weapons production in Ukraine.\"

The timing of Zelenskyy's visit coincides with a defense summit hosted by the UK, where European leaders are expected to convene in London to discuss a comprehensive peace plan for Ukraine. Starmer has indicated that any viable peace deal will likely involve significant input from the United States.

Zelenskyy's trip to London follows a recent contentious meeting with former U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, which ended in a public dispute. Despite the tension, Zelenskyy remains focused on strengthening Ukraine's defense and securing international support.

In his interactions with Starmer and other UK officials, Zelenskyy has underscored the importance of secure and reliable support systems to ensure Ukraine's sovereignty and stability in the face of adversity.
