EU and ICC Condemn Trump’s Sanctions on Court Officials

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has strongly condemned an executive order signed by former U.S. President Donald Trump, which imposes sanctions on its officials. In response, the ICC affirmed its commitment to providing justice to millions worldwide and urged its member states to remain united in this endeavor.

Trump's executive order authorizes both economic and travel sanctions against individuals involved in ICC investigations pertaining to U.S. citizens or its allies, including Israel. This move is reminiscent of actions taken during his initial term in office.

Amid widespread criticism of the sanctions, European Union leader Ursula von der Leyen expressed concern that such measures could jeopardize the pursuit of justice, particularly in matters related to Ukraine.

What Does Trump's Executive Order Mean?

Published on February 6, the executive order accuses the ICC of \"abusing its power\" by issuing what it describes as \"unwarranted arrest warrants\" for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

The order underscores that neither the U.S. nor Israel is a member of the ICC or a signatory to the Rome Statute. \"Neither country has ever recognized the ICC's jurisdiction, and both are thriving democracies with militaries that strictly adhere to the laws of war,\" Trump stated in the order.
