Canada Strikes Back: Trudeau Announces 25% Tariffs on $106B of U.S. Goods

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada will impose 25% tariffs on C$155 billion (US$106.5 billion) worth of U.S. goods in response to recent U.S. tariff measures.

In a press conference, Trudeau revealed that the initial tariffs amounting to C$30 billion will take effect from Tuesday, with the remaining C$125 billion to follow in 21 days. This move comes after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico starting on Tuesday, excluding Canadian energy products, which will face a 10% duty.

\"The coming weeks will be difficult for Canadians,\" Trudeau warned, highlighting that the U.S. tariffs would not only impact Canada but also have adverse effects on American consumers and industries.

Addressing the American public directly, he said: \"They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store, gas at the pump. They will impede your access to an affordable supply of vital goods.\"

The Canadian tariffs will target a range of U.S. products, including beer, wine, bourbon, clothing, sports equipment, household appliances, and fruits such as orange juice sourced from Florida, Trump's home state.

Beyond tariffs, Canada is exploring non-tariff measures that could affect critical minerals, energy procurement, and other strategic partnerships. Trudeau emphasized the importance of national solidarity, encouraging Canadians to support domestic products and consider traveling within Canada rather than visiting the U.S.

\"We didn't ask for this but we will not back down,\" Trudeau asserted, reaffirming Canada's stance against the U.S. trade actions.
