Canada Imposes 25% Tariffs on US Goods in Retaliation to Trump’s Trade Order

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada will impose 25% tariffs on C$155 billion (US$106.5 billion) worth of US goods. This move comes as a direct response to the US government's recent tariff measures against Canada and Mexico.

Speaking at a news conference, Trudeau detailed that C$30 billion of these tariffs will take effect from Tuesday, with the remaining C$125 billion to be implemented in 21 days. The targeted US goods include a range of products such as American beer, wine, bourbon, fruits, and fruit juices—including orange juice from President Trump's home state of Florida—as well as clothing, sports equipment, and household appliances.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump signed an executive order imposing 25% tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico starting on Tuesday, with the exception of Canadian energy products, which will face a 10% duty.

Trudeau warned that the upcoming weeks would be challenging for Canadians, emphasizing that the US tariffs would also negatively impact American consumers. Addressing the American public, he said, \"They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store, gas at the pump. They will impede your access to an affordable supply of vital goods.\"

In addition to tariffs, Canada is considering non-tariff measures that could involve critical minerals, energy procurement, and other partnerships. Trudeau urged Canadians to support domestic products and consider vacationing within Canada rather than in the US. \"We didn't ask for this but we will not back down,\" he asserted.
