Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Saturday that Canada would impose 25 percent tariffs on 155 billion Canadian dollars (106.5 billion US dollars) worth of US goods. This move comes in direct response to US President Donald Trump's executive order implementing 25 percent tariffs on all goods from Canada and Mexico, set to begin on Tuesday.
At a news conference, Trudeau detailed that 30 billion Canadian dollars in tariffs would take effect from Tuesday, with an additional 125 billion Canadian dollars following in 21 days. He warned that the forthcoming weeks would be challenging for Canadians and emphasized that Trump's tariffs would also have detrimental effects on Americans.
Addressing the American public, Trudeau stated: \"They will raise costs for you, including food at the grocery store, gas at the pump. They will impede your access to an affordable supply of vital goods.\"
The Canadian tariffs will target a wide range of American products, including beer, wine, bourbon, fruits, and fruit juices, notably orange juice from Florida, Trump's home state. Other goods affected include clothing, sports equipment, and household appliances.
Furthermore, Trudeau mentioned that Canada is considering non-tariff measures, potentially relating to critical minerals, energy procurement, and other partnerships. He encouraged Canadians to support domestic products and consider vacationing within Canada rather than in the United States.
\"We didn't ask for this but we will not back down,\" Trudeau affirmed.
