South Korean Parliament Impeaches President Yoon Suk-yeol, Suspended from Duties

In a historic move, South Korea’s parliament has passed an impeachment motion against President Yoon Suk-yeol, effectively suspending him from presidential duties pending a Constitutional Court decision. The impeachment motion garnered overwhelming support, with more than 200 lawmakers voting in favor out of the 300-seat National Assembly.

With President Yoon suspended, his duties will be temporarily transferred to the prime minister until the Constitutional Court reaches a verdict on whether to formally remove him from office. The court has up to 180 days to deliberate on the matter.

In the wake of the impeachment vote, the parliamentary speaker addressed the nation, urging both the government and parliament to collaborate closely to stabilize the country’s economy. \
