UN Chief Urges Israel’s Withdrawal from Lebanese Territory

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has called for the immediate withdrawal of Israeli forces from Lebanese territory, emphasizing the need for adherence to the agreed timeframe. Speaking at a press conference in Beirut on Saturday, Guterres highlighted the importance of respecting Lebanon’s sovereignty and implementing UN Resolution 1701.

“It is now essential to see the withdrawal of the Israel Defense Forces from Lebanese territory and the simultaneous deployment of the Lebanese Armed Forces across southern Lebanon in the agreed timeframe,” Guterres stated, concluding his two-day visit to the country.

He stressed that “Lebanon’s sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected, and the Lebanese state must have full control of weapons throughout Lebanese territory.”

Implementing UN Resolution 1701

The UN chief underscored the significance of fully implementing UN Resolution 1701, which was adopted in 2006 to end hostilities between Lebanon and Israel. “The United Nations—including through the UN Special Coordinator for Lebanon and UNIFIL—is committed to supporting the parties uphold their obligations under Resolution 1701 and ensuring that the cessation of hostilities holds,” he said.

Guterres noted that this commitment would lay the groundwork for the resolution’s ultimate goal: establishing a permanent ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel. “This would lay a platform for the full implementation of the resolution and its ultimate goal, a permanent ceasefire between Lebanon and Israel,” he added.

A Call for Peace and Stability

The Secretary-General’s visit comes at a critical time for the region, with tensions remaining high. His emphasis on the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the empowerment of the Lebanese Armed Forces reflects the international community’s desire for lasting peace and stability in the area.

By reinforcing the need for both nations to comply with international resolutions, Guterres aims to encourage dialogue and cooperation. The UN’s continued involvement is seen as vital in mediating and supporting efforts toward a sustainable resolution.
