Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is vowing a “strong, national response” should incoming U.S. President-elect Donald Trump make good on threats to impose a 25% tariff on all Canadian goods.
On Wednesday, January 15, Trudeau held a meeting with Canada’s provincial leaders to discuss possible retaliatory measures. The gathering focused on strategies to protect Canada’s economy and key industries from the potential impact of the proposed tariffs.
One of the sectors that would feel the brunt of stiff tariffs is Canada’s energy industry. Leaders expressed concern over the economic consequences and the ripple effects such trade barriers could have across the nation.
“We stand ready to defend our nation’s interests and will take necessary actions to ensure the prosperity of Canadians,” Trudeau stated following the meeting.
