Russia Open to Discussing Ukraine Security Guarantees, Says Lavrov

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has announced Moscow’s readiness to engage in discussions regarding security guarantees for Ukraine. Speaking on Tuesday during his annual press briefing, Lavrov emphasized the importance of agreeing on broader security issues to bring an end to the ongoing conflict.

“Moscow is prepared to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine; however, it is important to agree on broader security issues to end the ongoing conflict,” Lavrov stated. He highlighted that eliminating threats on Russia’s western borders is essential, noting that these threats have been a root cause of the tensions.

Lavrov asserted that these security concerns can only be addressed within the framework of broader agreements. “These threats can only be removed within the framework of broader agreements,” he said, underscoring the need for comprehensive dialogue.

The Russian foreign minister also commented on the incoming U.S. administration. He noted that after President-elect Donald Trump takes office, Moscow will study his official position on Ukraine. Lavrov expressed optimism, stating that Moscow welcomes the fact that the incoming U.S. administration has focused more on the realities on the ground in Ukraine within the context of a potential resolution to the Ukrainian crisis.

Furthermore, Lavrov reiterated that Russian President Vladimir Putin is ready to meet with Trump. “President Putin is ready to meet Trump,” he said, adding, however, that there have currently been no proposals from the United States.

The prospect of renewed dialogue between Moscow and Washington raises hopes for progress in resolving the Ukrainian conflict, which has had significant implications for regional stability and international relations.
