China and Japan’s Ruling Parties Vow to Strengthen Dialogue Amid Global Challenges

BEIJING—In a significant move to bolster bilateral relations, the ruling parties of China and Japan agreed on Tuesday to maintain close dialogue and communication, regardless of the challenges facing their relationship. The consensus was reached during the ninth meeting of the China-Japan ruling parties exchange mechanism held in Beijing.

Representatives from the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Japan’s Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) and Komeito Party engaged in candid discussions, emphasizing the critical responsibilities and roles both nations should assume in upholding international order based on international law amidst global upheavals.

The ruling parties recognized the substantial impact of their exchange mechanism since its inception in 2006, highlighting its role in guiding the development of China-Japan relations. They celebrated the resumption of inter-party talks after a hiatus of over six years, marking a renewed commitment to collaboration.

Enhancing Mutual Trust and Cooperation

Focusing on deepening their strategic partnership, both sides discussed measures to enhance mutual trust, expand cultural exchanges, and strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation. They agreed to adhere to the principles established in the four China-Japan political documents, following the direction set by their leaders.

The parties pledged joint efforts to comprehensively advance strategic and mutually beneficial relations. Their aim is to build a constructive and stable relationship that aligns with the requirements of the new era, fostering peace and prosperity in the region.

Addressing Key Concerns

The discussions also touched upon pressing issues, including the discharge of nuclear-contaminated water from Japan’s Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station into the ocean and Japanese seafood product imports. Both sides agreed to promote the implementation of the consensus reached by their governments, accelerate communication and consultation, and address each other’s concerns appropriately.

Commitment to Ongoing Dialogue

Understanding the importance of sustained communication, the ruling parties agreed to strengthen dialogue irrespective of the situation facing China-Japan relations. They emphasized the need to enhance mutual understanding and trust, and to facilitate exchanges between political parties, seasoned politicians, and young leaders. This approach aims to lay a solid political foundation for the improvement and development of bilateral relations.

In a forward-looking gesture, both parties agreed in principle to hold the tenth meeting of the exchange mechanism in Japan this autumn, reaffirming their dedication to continuous engagement and cooperation.
