Massive 43-Vehicle Pileup Near Seoul Leaves Nine Injured

Nine people were injured on Tuesday in a massive pileup involving 43 vehicles on a highway near Goyang, west of Seoul, according to Yonhap news agency.

The multiple collisions occurred around 5:50 a.m. local time. It is believed that black ice—a thin layer of ice formed from melting snow—was the cause of the accident. The slick road conditions caught drivers off guard, leading to the chain-reaction crash.

Emergency services responded promptly, and the nine injured drivers were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. Police and fire authorities worked to control and clear the affected section of the highway, but the accident caused significant traffic congestion, stretching over a 3-kilometer area.

Commuters faced delays as authorities managed the aftermath of the pileup. Officials have urged motorists to exercise caution during winter conditions, highlighting the dangers of black ice on roads.

Investigations are underway to determine the exact circumstances of the accidents. Authorities emphasize the importance of safe driving practices, especially in adverse weather conditions.
