Lebanon’s President Appoints Nawaf Salam as New Prime Minister

In a significant political development, Lebanon’s President Joseph Aoun appointed Nawaf Salam, president of the International Court of Justice, as the country’s new prime minister on Monday, according to local TV channel Al Jadeed.

During consultations convened by President Aoun, Salam secured 84 votes in the 128-seat parliament, showcasing substantial support for his leadership. Former Prime Minister Najib Mikati garnered nine votes, while 35 lawmakers refrained from naming any candidate to head the cabinet.

Salam’s appointment comes at a critical time for Lebanon as the nation seeks to navigate complex political and economic challenges. His role as the head of the International Court of Justice brings a wealth of international experience, which may influence Lebanon’s future domestic and foreign policies.

The formation of a new government under Salam’s leadership is anticipated to address pressing issues and implement reforms aimed at stabilizing the country’s economic landscape. The coming weeks will be crucial as Salam assembles his cabinet and outlines his plan for governance.
