The Danish government has requested a phone conversation with U.S. President-elect Donald Trump following his controversial remarks on Greenland, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen announced during a press conference late Thursday.
While no official response has been received, Frederiksen emphasized Denmark’s desire to engage in dialogue with the incoming U.S. administration. “We have initiated informal communication since the election and hope to continue discussions following the inauguration,” she stated.
The request comes after Trump indicated he would not rule out military measures to gain control over Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. In response, Frederiksen assured that there is currently no reason to believe action will be taken on these statements. Foreign Minister Lars Lokke Rasmussen added, “We should take him seriously, but not literally.”
Earlier, all party leaders in the Folketing, Denmark’s Parliament, were briefed on ongoing diplomatic efforts regarding the situation. However, differing views emerged among political parties following the briefing. The Danish People’s Party called for clearer policies concerning Greenland’s autonomy, while the Red-Green Alliance criticized the government’s stance as too lenient toward the United States.
Greenland’s strategic importance and autonomy have now been thrust into the international spotlight. As the world’s largest island, it holds significant natural resources and occupies a vital geopolitical position in the Arctic. Denmark is navigating these diplomatic challenges to maintain strong international relations while respecting Greenland’s self-governance.
