Police Brace for Yoon Suk-yeol Arrest as Warrant Nears Expiration

South Korea’s anti-corruption agency has notified the police of its intention to transfer the execution of an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk-yeol, as the warrant is set to expire on Monday.

Yoon, who is under criminal investigation for insurrection following his December 3 martial law declaration, has repeatedly failed to appear for questioning. The shocking declaration led to widespread unrest and ultimately his impeachment.

The National Assembly passed the impeachment motion against Yoon on December 14 last year, suspending his presidential powers and handing the case to the constitutional court for deliberation, which could last up to 180 days.

Last week, a tense six-hour standoff unfolded in central Seoul when presidential guards and military forces prevented authorities from arresting Yoon inside his compound. The dramatic confrontation highlighted the deep divisions within the country.

With the court-ordered warrant set to expire, officials from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) may attempt another arrest before the deadline. According to local media YTN, the anti-corruption agency plans to request an extension of the execution period for the warrant on Monday.

Yoon’s lawyers have maintained that the warrant is “unlawful” and “illegal,” vowing to pursue further legal action. The unfolding situation has captivated the nation, with many awaiting the outcome of this high-stakes legal battle.

The political turmoil comes at a critical time for South Korea, as it navigates economic challenges and regional tensions. Observers are closely monitoring the developments, which could have significant implications for the country’s future leadership and stability.
