French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot expressed hope for a “sovereign, stable and peaceful” Syria during his visit to Damascus on Friday. Representing the European Union, Barrot engaged in talks aimed at fostering stability in the war-torn nation.
“This hope is real but also fragile,” Barrot told journalists at the French embassy in Damascus. His visit marks his first trip to Syria since Islamist-led forces toppled President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Barrot’s discussions focused on the prospects of rebuilding Syria’s political landscape and addressing the ongoing humanitarian crisis. “The Syrian people have endured immense hardship, and it is imperative that we support them in achieving lasting peace and sovereignty,” he stated.
The French Foreign Minister emphasized the importance of international cooperation in facilitating Syria’s path towards stability. He called on regional and global partners to contribute to efforts that would ensure a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
Barrot’s visit signifies a renewed engagement by the European Union in Middle Eastern affairs, highlighting the bloc’s commitment to promoting peace and stability in the region. Observers note that this move may pave the way for increased diplomatic initiatives in Syria.
As the situation in Syria remains complex, Barrot acknowledged the challenges ahead. “We are aware of the difficulties, but we remain dedicated to working towards a future where Syria is sovereign, stable, and peaceful,” he affirmed.
