France’s Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot expressed his hope on Friday for a “sovereign, stable and peaceful” Syria during his visit to Damascus for talks on behalf of the European Union.
“This hope is real but also fragile,” Barrot told journalists at the French embassy in Damascus. This marks his first visit to Syria since Islamist-led forces toppled President Bashar al-Assad’s government.
Barrot’s visit signifies a renewed engagement by the European Union in the Syrian conflict, aiming to support the country’s transition towards stability after years of turmoil.
During his meetings with Syrian officials, Barrot emphasized the importance of rebuilding institutions and fostering unity among the Syrian people. He stressed, “A peaceful Syria is not only crucial for its citizens but also for the stability of the entire region.”
The French Foreign Minister also highlighted the European Union’s commitment to assisting Syria in its reconstruction efforts, providing humanitarian aid, and supporting initiatives that promote peace and reconciliation.
Local residents and analysts view Barrot’s visit as a positive step towards international cooperation in addressing Syria’s complex challenges. However, they acknowledge that achieving lasting peace will require sustained efforts and collaboration among all stakeholders.
Barrot is expected to meet with leaders of the new Syrian government, representatives of civil society, and humanitarian organizations before concluding his visit.
