South Korea’s President Yoon to Submit Written Opinion Over Arrest Warrant

South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol will submit a written opinion and appoint defense counsel to the Seoul Western District Court, according to reports from Yonhap news agency on Monday citing Yoon's representatives.

Yoon Kab-keun, a lawyer and former prosecutor representing President Yoon, stated that the written opinion would be submitted later in the day to the court. The Seoul Western District Court is considering an arrest warrant for President Yoon following a request from the joint investigation unit over his brief imposition of martial law earlier this month.

The lawyer also confirmed that the appointment letter for President Yoon's defense counsel would be delivered to the court.

This development comes shortly after South Korea's joint investigation unit requested an arrest warrant for the suspended president on charges of insurrection and abuse of power. President Yoon had previously ignored three summonses to appear for questioning.

A Seoul court is expected to decide whether to issue the arrest warrant following the investigators' request.

President Yoon has denied the charges against him, asserting that his declaration of martial law was an "act of governance" intended to warn the opposition party against what he described as its abuse of legislative power.
