Geoffrey Hinton, the renowned British-Canadian computer scientist often referred to as the “godfather” of Artificial Intelligence (AI), has issued a stark warning about the potential existential threat posed by AI within the next three decades.
In a recent interview on BBC Radio 4’s Today program, Hinton revealed that he now estimates a “10 percent to 20 percent” chance that AI could lead to humanity’s extinction by 2050. This marks an increase from his earlier assessment, reflecting his growing concern over the rapid pace of AI development.
“We’ve never had to deal with things more intelligent than ourselves before,” Hinton said, highlighting the unprecedented nature of the challenges ahead.
