Gaza City, November 15, 2023 — Hamas announced on Wednesday that new conditions set by Israel have delayed reaching a ceasefire agreement in the Gaza Strip. Despite the setbacks, the group affirmed that negotiations are ongoing in Doha, mediated by Qatar and Egypt.
“The ceasefire and prisoner exchange negotiations are continuing in Doha under the mediation of Qatar and Egypt in a serious manner,” Hamas stated. “But the occupation has set new conditions concerning withdrawal of troops, the ceasefire, prisoners, and the return of displaced people, which has delayed reaching an agreement.”
Reports from Israeli and Palestinian media indicate that discussions led by Qatari, Egyptian, and U.S. mediators have made progress, yet a definitive breakthrough remains elusive. The negotiations aim to halt the hostilities that have escalated in the region over the past weeks.
The conflict intensified following a Hamas attack on the southern Israeli border on October 7, 2023, during which about 1,200 people were killed and approximately 250 were taken hostage. In response, Israel has been conducting a large-scale offensive against Hamas in the Gaza Strip.
The humanitarian situation in Gaza continues to deteriorate. Gaza-based health authorities reported on Wednesday that the Palestinian death toll from the ongoing Israeli attacks has risen to 45,361. The international community has expressed growing concern over the rising number of casualties and the urgent need for a ceasefire.
The negotiations in Doha represent a critical effort to bring an end to the violence. Both sides face increasing pressure to resolve their differences and address the humanitarian crisis affecting thousands of civilians in the region.
