Syria’s New Leader Ahmed al-Sharaa Vows State Control Over All Weapons

Two weeks after seizing power in a sweeping offensive, Syria’s new leader Ahmed al-Sharaa announced on Sunday that all weapons in the country, including those held by Kurdish-led forces, will come under state control.

Speaking at a press conference alongside Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, al-Sharaa emphasized the government’s commitment to unifying the nation’s armed factions. “We will absolutely not allow there to be weapons in the country outside state control, whether from the revolutionary factions or the factions present in the SDF area,” he stated, referring to the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF).

Al-Sharaa revealed that Syria’s various armed groups “will begin to announce their dissolution and enter” the national army. “We are working on protecting sects and minorities from any attacks that occur between them,” he added, highlighting efforts to prevent “external” actors from exploiting tensions to “cause sectarian discord.”

“Syria is a country for all, and we can coexist together,” al-Sharaa declared, calling for unity and reconciliation in the war-torn nation.

Turkish Foreign Minister Fidan echoed the call for stability and reconstruction, urging for sanctions on Syria to “be lifted as soon as possible.” He appealed to the international community to “mobilize to help Syria get back on its feet and for the displaced people to return.”

Syria’s nearly 14-year civil war has claimed more than half a million lives and displaced over half of its population, with millions seeking refuge in neighboring countries, including three million in Türkiye.
