Car Attack at German Christmas Market Leaves Five Dead, Hundreds Injured

A tragic car attack at a Christmas market in the German city of Magdeburg has left at least five people dead and more than 200 injured, many of them seriously, according to state premier Reiner Haseloff.

The incident occurred when a vehicle plowed through crowds gathered at the festive market on Friday evening. Among the victims was a young child, adding to the sorrow that has gripped the central German city.

Authorities have arrested a 50-year-old Saudi Arabian man who has been living in Germany for nearly two decades. The suspect, who worked as a doctor in a nearby town, was taken into custody at the scene. Police have not released his name but have searched his home overnight as part of the ongoing investigation.

Der Spiegel magazine reported that the suspect had expressed sympathies with the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party. German authorities are examining these claims as they probe the motives behind the attack.

A Saudi source told Reuters that Saudi Arabia had previously warned German authorities about the suspect after he posted extremist views on his personal X account that threatened peace and security.

The attack has sent shockwaves through Germany, coming at a time of heightened debate over migration and security. The nation is gearing up for a snap election on February 23, and issues of immigration and national security have been at the forefront of political discourse.

The AfD, currently polling in second place behind the conservative opposition, has intensified calls for a crackdown on migration. AfD chancellor candidate Alice Weidel condemned the attack, stating on X, “The pictures from #Magdeburg are shocking! My thoughts are with the bereaved and injured. When will this madness come to an end?”

Local officials are urging calm and unity in the wake of the tragedy. “We must stand together against hatred and violence,” said state premier Haseloff. “Our thoughts are with the victims and their families during this difficult time.”

The injured, numbering more than 200, are receiving treatment in local hospitals. Authorities have set up a hotline for families seeking information about their loved ones.

The investigation is ongoing, and officials are expected to provide further updates as more information becomes available.
