The European Union’s foreign policy chief, Kaja Kallas, announced on Monday that she has dispatched the bloc’s top diplomat for Syria to Damascus to initiate contact with the country’s new government.
Speaking to reporters upon her arrival at a meeting of EU foreign ministers in Brussels, Kallas emphasized the importance of re-establishing dialogue with Syria. “We believe it is crucial to engage with the new Syrian leadership to address ongoing regional challenges and promote stability,” she stated.
The envoy is scheduled to arrive in the Syrian capital on Monday, marking the first high-level engagement between the EU and Syria’s new administration. This move signals a potential shift in the EU’s approach to Syria amid evolving geopolitical dynamics in the Middle East.
Kallas highlighted that the diplomat’s mission will focus on assessing the situation on the ground and exploring avenues for cooperation on issues such as humanitarian aid, security, and the refugee crisis. “Our goal is to support the Syrian people and contribute to lasting peace in the region,” she added.
EU foreign ministers are expected to discuss the outcomes of this diplomatic outreach in upcoming meetings, as the bloc considers its role in Syria’s reconstruction and reconciliation efforts.
