UN Chief Guterres Affirms Syria’s Future Lies with Syrians

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres emphasized on Sunday that the future of Syria is for the Syrians to determine. Addressing concerns over the ongoing situation in the country, Guterres stated that United Nations Special Envoy Geir Pedersen “will be working with them towards that end.”

Speaking to reporters, Guterres underscored the importance of Syrian-led solutions to bring lasting peace and stability to the region. He reaffirmed the UN’s commitment to supporting the Syrian people in their pursuit of a resolution that reflects their aspirations and needs.

“The future of Syria must be decided by Syrians themselves,” Guterres said, highlighting the role of dialogue and cooperation. “Our special envoy, Geir Pedersen, will continue to engage with all parties to facilitate this process.”

The UN chief’s remarks come at a critical time, as the international community looks towards renewed efforts to address the challenges facing Syria. The involvement of the UN aims to support inclusive discussions and aid in overcoming obstacles to peace.

Geir Pedersen, appointed as the UN Special Envoy for Syria, has been actively involved in diplomatic efforts to mediate between various stakeholders. His mandate includes fostering negotiations and promoting a political settlement in line with the wishes of the Syrian people.

The emphasis on a Syrian-owned process reflects the UN’s approach to conflict resolution, focusing on empowerment and support rather than the imposition of external agendas.
