New York City, NY — Police believe the suspect who fatally shot Brian Thomson, the 50-year-old CEO of UnitedHealthcare’s insurance unit, has left New York City, intensifying a nationwide manhunt that has entered its third day.
On Wednesday, Thomson was shot in the back in what authorities have described as a targeted attack. The assailant fled the scene on an electric bicycle, disappearing into Central Park. Despite multiple photos of the suspect released to the public, he remains at large.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch announced on Friday that new video footage suggests the suspect has fled the city. “We have video of him entering the Port Authority Bus Terminal. We don’t have any video of him exiting, so we believe he may have gotten on a bus,” added NYPD Chief of Detectives Joseph Kenny in an interview with CNN. “Those buses are interstate buses. That’s why we believe he may have left New York City.”
The revelation comes as security experts warn that the crucial 48-hour window to capture the gunman has passed. Former NYPD detective Felipe Rodriguez emphasized the urgency, stating, “The clock is running. They still haven’t recovered the gun, the bicycle, the backpack. The longer it takes, they could be losing vital pieces of evidence.”
Rodriguez compared the investigation to assembling a complex puzzle. “You start from edges first and work your way in, but right now they might not have all the pieces. But the case is moving forward,” he said.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward as the search extends beyond state lines. The public’s assistance is considered vital in piecing together the suspect’s movements and bringing justice for Thomson’s family and colleagues.
