UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Thursday called for an immediate ceasefire in Syria and a return to the United Nations-facilitated political process to end the protracted conflict. Speaking amidst escalating violence, Guterres emphasized the urgent need to halt the bloodshed and engage in serious dialogue.
The latest offensive was launched by Hayat Tahrir al-Sham, a group sanctioned by the UN Security Council, along with various other armed opposition factions. Together, they have advanced into government-controlled areas, seizing key cities such as Aleppo and Hama. The Syrian army announced a withdrawal from Hama and the redeployment of forces outside the city, signaling a significant shift in territorial control.
“We are witnessing the bitter fruits of a chronic collective failure to establish a genuine nationwide ceasefire or implement a serious political process in line with Security Council resolutions,” Guterres remarked. “These must change.”
The UN chief urged all parties to engage earnestly with Geir Pedersen, the UN Special Envoy for Syria, to develop a new, inclusive, and comprehensive approach to resolve the crisis. “After 14 years of conflict, it is high time for serious dialogue,” he stated. “In other words, restoring Syria’s sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity – and meeting the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people.”
Guterres highlighted the importance of implementing Security Council Resolution 2254, which outlines a roadmap for a political settlement in Syria. The resolution calls for a nationwide ceasefire, constitutional reforms, and UN-supervised elections.
The escalation in violence has raised international concerns over the humanitarian situation in Syria. The conflict has displaced millions and left countless civilians in need of assistance. The UN continues to advocate for unfettered access to deliver humanitarian aid to affected populations.
As the situation unfolds, the call for a ceasefire and renewed political dialogue underscores the international community’s desire for a peaceful resolution to the Syrian conflict. The UN’s appeal reflects a broader commitment to supporting Syria’s path toward stability and addressing the needs of its people.
