Dozens Killed in Stampede Following Clashes at Guinea Football Match

Nzerekore, Guinea—Tragedy struck on Sunday as clashes between fans at a football match in southeastern Guinea led to a deadly stampede, resulting in dozens of fatalities, hospital sources reported.

A doctor from the local hospital, speaking on condition of anonymity, revealed, “There are around 100 dead,” noting that the bodies are overwhelming the hospital and morgue facilities. Another medical professional confirmed the alarming number, stating there were “dozens of dead.”

The incident occurred during the final of a local tournament between the Labe and Nzerekore teams, held in honor of Guinea’s military leader, Mamadi Doumbouya. Guinea’s Prime Minister Amadou Oury Bah addressed the tragedy on the social media platform X, expressing condolences and concern over the incident.

Local media outlets reported that the chaos erupted following a disputed penalty, igniting anger among supporters who began throwing stones. In an attempt to restore order, security forces deployed tear gas, which inadvertently exacerbated the situation, leading to the fatal stampede.

“This angered supporters who threw stones. This is how the security services used tear gas,” noted a local media source. The stampede claimed the lives of several children, and numerous injured individuals are receiving treatment at a regional hospital, with some in critical condition.

The government has yet to release an official statement on the incident, but the shockwaves of the tragedy are being felt nationwide as families and communities grapple with the loss.
