IAEA Board Passes Resolution Pressuring Iran Amid Nuclear Tensions

The United Nations’ atomic watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has passed a resolution demanding that Iran enhance its cooperation with the agency, as Western nations intensify efforts to bring Tehran back to the negotiating table over its nuclear program.

On Thursday, the IAEA’s 35-member Board of Governors approved the resolution, which calls on Iran to urgently address outstanding concerns regarding its nuclear activities. Proposed by the United States, Britain, France, and Germany, the resolution also requests a comprehensive report from the agency, aiming to increase pressure on Iran to engage in fresh nuclear discussions.

The Western countries dismissed a last-minute proposal by Iran to limit its stockpile of near-weapons-grade uranium, describing it as inadequate and insincere. Iran has historically reacted to such resolutions by escalating its nuclear activities and reducing the IAEA’s oversight capabilities.

The vote saw 19 nations in favor, with China, Russia, and Burkina Faso opposing the resolution, and 12 countries abstaining, according to diplomats present at the meeting.
