U.S. Vetoes UN Security Council Resolution on Gaza Ceasefire

In a critical meeting on Wednesday, the United States vetoed a United Nations Security Council resolution calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The resolution, proposed by the ten non-permanent members of the council, sought an “immediate, unconditional and permanent ceasefire” and also demanded the release of hostages.

The 15-member council gathered to vote on the resolution, with 14 members in favor. However, as a permanent member, the U.S. exercised its veto power to block the resolution, standing alone against the collective support of the other members.

The U.S. veto effectively halted the council’s efforts to call for a ceasefire in Gaza, despite widespread backing from the international community represented in the council.
