Global experts have commended Chinese President Xi Jinping’s recent speeches at the G20 summit in Rio de Janeiro, highlighting his commitment to fostering global development and enhancing international cooperation.
At the summit’s first session, President Xi announced China’s eight major actions aimed at bolstering global development. He called for building more “bridges for cooperation” and reducing “small yards, high fences” to support the modernization efforts of developing nations and to construct a just world where development is shared among all.
In the second session, President Xi presented a five-point proposal to improve global governance, emphasizing the need for greater international consensus to promote an equal and orderly multipolar world and foster universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization.
Sourabh Gupta, a senior fellow at the Washington-based Institute for China-America Studies, praised President Xi’s emphasis on cooperation. “It’s easy to say that poverty alleviation is the top priority, but it’s not easy to provide resources effectively and efficiently,” Gupta stated. “I think China has done that.”
Wirun Phichaiwongphakdee, director of the Thailand-China Research Center of the Belt and Road Initiative, remarked that President Xi’s announcement demonstrates the extraordinary courage and historical responsibility of a leader of a great nation. He noted that China’s concrete actions, such as the Belt and Road Initiative, have brought unprecedented connectivity to the world.
Mohammed Al-Bishi, acting editor-in-chief of Aleqtisadiah, a Saudi business newspaper, highlighted that President Xi’s speeches once again showed China’s commitment to helping developing countries and people in need. “When China commits to something, it makes it easier for other countries to follow suit,” he said.
President Xi reaffirmed China’s pledge to assist African nations, including a funding commitment of 360 billion yuan for partnership actions in modernization efforts. Experts believe these initiatives will bring tangible benefits to Africa.
Dr. Matthew L. Bishop, Senior Lecturer in International Politics at the University of Sheffield, emphasized the importance of China’s sustained ties with African countries over the past decades. “These investment relationships are significant in supporting China’s transformation and in transforming local economies in Africa as well,” Bishop observed.
Xu Feibiao, director of the Center for BRICS and G20 Studies at China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, noted that the eight major actions will deliver concrete benefits to Africa, promoting modernization and shared development.
Professor Wang Yiwei from the School of International Studies at Renmin University of China stated that President Xi’s speeches demonstrate that China stands by Africa in its development journey and in amplifying Africa’s voice on the international stage. “Mentioning Africa at the G20 summit helps the world refocus on the continent’s development, transforming it into a region full of hope,” Wang said.
