Peru’s Chancay Port Set to Transform South America-Asia Trade

Amidst rising anticipation, Peru’s Chancay Port is poised to become a pivotal hub connecting South America with the Asia-Pacific region. Set near the small town of Chancay, just north of Lima, the mega port’s inauguration is around the corner and promises to revolutionize trade by significantly reducing transit times and costs.

As a deepwater port boasting a maximum depth of 17.8 meters, Chancay Port is capable of accommodating ultra-large container vessels, positioning it as a strategic gateway for international shipping routes. The Chancay Terminal project includes the development of a multi-purpose terminal, a container terminal, and extensive related infrastructure.

In its first phase, the project plans to construct four berths—two multi-purpose and two container berths. According to the Belt and Road Portal website, the terminal is designed to handle an impressive annual throughput of one million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units), six million tonnes of general cargo, and 160,000 vehicles.

Peru’s President Dina Boluarte highlighted the significance of the project in July, stating that the megaport will serve as a “nerve center” to facilitate connections between South America and Asia. The development of Chancay Port underscores Peru’s commitment to enhancing its trade infrastructure and fostering stronger economic ties with the Asia-Pacific region.

The inauguration of Chancay Port marks a significant milestone not only for Peru but for global trade dynamics. By streamlining logistics and offering state-of-the-art facilities, the port is expected to boost economic growth, attract investment, and open new opportunities for businesses and investors seeking access to Asian markets.
