Former Ecuador Trade Minister Sonsoles García Highlights Growing Ties with China

In recent years, China has solidified its position as the primary business partner for several Latin American countries, including some of the region’s largest economies like Brazil and Chile. Ecuador has joined this growing list, recently entering into a free trade agreement with the Chinese mainland, signaling a new era of economic collaboration.

Sonsoles García, former Minister of Trade for Ecuador, shared her insights on the burgeoning commerce and business opportunities in the Chinese market. Speaking in an interview with journalist Elaine Reyes, García emphasized the significant potential that the partnership holds for Ecuador’s economic growth and diversification.

“The free trade agreement with China opens doors for Ecuadorian products to reach a vast market,” García stated. “It allows us to enhance our export capabilities, especially in sectors like agriculture, fisheries, and manufacturing.”

She highlighted how the agreement not only benefits trade but also encourages investment and technological exchange. “Chinese companies are showing interest in investing in Ecuador’s infrastructure and energy sectors. This collaboration can lead to job creation and shared expertise,” García explained.

The former minister also discussed the broader implications for Latin America. “As more countries in our region engage with China, we’re witnessing a shift towards a more multipolar trade environment. It’s important for us to embrace these opportunities while ensuring sustainable and equitable growth,” she noted.

Ecuador’s move aligns with a regional trend of strengthening ties with China, reflecting the dynamic changes in global economic relations. As trade relations deepen, stakeholders are keen to explore how this partnership can drive development and innovation across various industries.
