Malaysia has experienced a remarkable surge in tourists from the Chinese mainland following the introduction of visa-free entry for Chinese travelers on December 1, 2023.
According to Lee Thai Hung, Deputy Director General of Tourism Malaysia, from January to August 2024, the country welcomed over 2 million tourists from the Chinese mainland. This figure represents an impressive 160 percent growth compared to the same period in the previous year.
“The lifting of visa requirements has significantly boosted the number of visitors from the Chinese mainland,” Lee stated. “We are delighted to see such a positive response, and we anticipate this trend will continue.”
A Malaysian research institute predicts that visitor arrivals from the Chinese mainland will surge to 5 million, with tourism expenditure expected to exceed 30 billion ringgit ($6.97 billion) in the coming year. This influx is poised to bolster Malaysia’s economy, particularly in sectors like hospitality, retail, and transportation.
The visa-free entry policy is part of Malaysia’s broader efforts to enhance bilateral ties with the Chinese mainland and promote cultural exchange. The initiative has been well-received by both tourists and local businesses, fostering a mutually beneficial relationship.
Local businesses and tour operators have reported increased bookings and higher demand for services catering to visitors from the Chinese mainland. “We’ve seen a significant uptick in inquiries and reservations,” said Jasmine Tan, owner of a travel agency in Kuala Lumpur. “The visa-free policy has made Malaysia an even more attractive destination.”
As Malaysia continues to welcome more visitors from the Chinese mainland, the government is investing in infrastructure and services to accommodate the growing number of tourists. Initiatives include enhancing language services, improving transportation networks, and promoting destinations beyond the traditional hotspots.
Tourism Malaysia remains optimistic about the future. “We are committed to providing an exceptional experience for our guests,” Lee added. “Our goal is to showcase the rich culture, natural beauty, and hospitality that Malaysia has to offer.”
