In a tragic incident late Friday night, at least 25 people, including women and children, drowned when traffickers deliberately capsized their boat off the Comoros Islands, according to the International Organization for Migration (IOM).
The overcrowded vessel, carrying around 30 individuals of various nationalities, was navigating the waters between Anjouan and Mayotte when the traffickers intentionally overturned it. Survivors recounted the harrowing experience, describing chaos and despair as they struggled to stay afloat.
“IOM Comoros is saddened to hear about the deaths of at least 25 people after their boat was deliberately capsized by traffickers off Comoros Islands,” the organization stated on Monday. The IOM emphasized the vulnerability of migrants in the region and the ruthless tactics employed by traffickers.
The passengers included seven women and six children, highlighting the indiscriminate nature of human trafficking and the dire circumstances that drive people to undertake such perilous journeys. The Comoros Islands, located off the eastern coast of Africa, have become a critical point in migration routes, with many seeking passage to the French territory of Mayotte.
Authorities are conducting search and rescue operations, although hopes of finding additional survivors are diminishing. The incident underscores the urgent need for international cooperation to combat human trafficking and protect the rights of migrants.
“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the risks faced by migrants and the callousness of traffickers who prioritize profit over human life,” an IOM spokesperson commented. “We must strengthen efforts to provide safe pathways and address the root causes of migration.”
The IOM and local organizations are providing support to the survivors, offering medical assistance and counseling services. The Comoros government has yet to release an official statement regarding the incident.
As the international community grapples with migration challenges, this devastating event highlights the critical importance of addressing human trafficking and ensuring the safety and dignity of all individuals seeking a better life.
