Early exit polls from Uruguay’s presidential election indicate that center-left opposition candidate Yamandu Orsi is leading over his conservative rival Alvaro Delgado, suggesting that a second round of voting will be necessary.
According to an exit poll conducted by Cifra, Orsi has secured 44% of the vote. Delgado, representing the ruling coalition, trails with 27%, while young, social media-savvy conservative Andrés Ojeda has garnered 16%.
Ojeda has previously pledged his support to Delgado in an effort to prevent the left from returning to power, should he be eliminated from the race. His backing could prove pivotal in the anticipated runoff.
Prior to the election, pollsters had predicted that no candidate would surpass the 50% threshold required for an outright victory. This forecast sets the stage for a second round of voting scheduled for November 24 between the top two finishers from Sunday’s election.
