Egypt Proposes Two-Day Gaza Ceasefire for Hostage Exchange

In a significant diplomatic move, Egypt has proposed a two-day ceasefire in Gaza to facilitate an exchange of hostages and prisoners. President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi announced the proposal on Sunday during a joint press conference in Cairo with Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

The proposed ceasefire aims to secure the release of four Israeli hostages in exchange for a number of Palestinian prisoners. “We have put forward an initiative for a 48-hour ceasefire that would see the exchange of hostages and prisoners between both sides,” President Sisi stated.

Emphasizing the urgency of the situation, President Sisi called for the resumption of talks within ten days of implementing the temporary ceasefire to work towards a permanent resolution. “We believe that immediate dialogue is essential to achieving long-lasting peace and stability in the region,” he said.

The Egyptian leader highlighted the humanitarian impact of the ongoing conflict in Gaza and stressed the importance of international cooperation to alleviate suffering and prevent further escalation. “Egypt is committed to playing a constructive role in mediating between the parties,” President Sisi affirmed.

Algerian President Tebboune expressed support for Egypt’s initiative, underscoring the need for collective efforts to address the crisis. “We stand with Egypt in its endeavors to bring about peace and support the rights of the Palestinian people,” he remarked.

The proposed ceasefire comes amid heightened tensions and continued hostilities in the Gaza Strip. Observers hope that this initiative could pave the way for more comprehensive peace negotiations and a lasting solution to the long-standing conflict.
