Xi Jinping and Egypt’s President al-Sisi Strengthen Ties at BRICS Summit

Johannesburg, South Africa — Chinese President Xi Jinping met with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi on Wednesday during the 16th BRICS Summit, marking a significant moment in the ongoing partnership between China and Egypt.

President Xi congratulated Egypt on its first participation as a full member of the BRICS cooperation mechanism, welcoming it into the expanding group of emerging economies. “China is willing to be a sincere friend that looks out for each other and a close partner for joint development with Egypt,” Xi said.

This year commemorates the China-Egypt Year of Partnership and the 10th anniversary of their comprehensive strategic partnership. Xi emphasized China’s firm support for Egypt in safeguarding its national sovereignty, security, and development interests.

The two leaders agreed to deepen practical cooperation, advance high-quality Belt and Road collaboration, and strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges. Xi expressed China’s readiness to work together toward building a China-Egypt community with a shared future in the new era.

President al-Sisi recognized China as Egypt’s sincerest friend, highlighting the fruitful results achieved in various fields over the past decade. He expressed gratitude for China’s valuable assistance and reaffirmed Egypt’s adherence to the one-China principle.

“Egypt fully understands the extreme importance of the Taiwan question to China,” al-Sisi stated. He conveyed Egypt’s willingness to align its development strategies with the Belt and Road Initiative and enhance practical cooperation in various sectors.

The discussion also touched on the current situation in the Middle East. President Xi voiced deep concern over the ongoing tensions, emphasizing that wars and chaos serve no one’s interests. He called for the full and effective implementation of UN Security Council resolutions to end the fighting in Gaza promptly.

“Only by implementing the two-state solution can a comprehensive, just, and lasting settlement of the Palestinian issue be promoted,” Xi asserted. He appreciated Egypt’s efforts to promote a ceasefire and expressed China’s readiness to strengthen coordination to ease regional tensions.

Both leaders emphasized the importance of enhancing multilateral coordination to safeguard the common interests of developing countries and the Global South. They agreed to promote a more just and equitable global governance system through their collaboration within the BRICS framework.
