Iceland's three-party coalition government, which has governed the country since November 2021, collapsed on Sunday due to significant disagreements over key policy issues, Prime Minister Bjarni Benediktsson announced. The breakdown of the coalition paves the way for new parliamentary elections to be held in November.
\"There are very different views … on issues ranging from foreign policy to asylum seekers,\" Benediktsson told reporters during a press briefing. The Prime Minister noted that the divergent perspectives among coalition members have made it untenable to continue governing effectively.
Benediktsson stated that he would meet with Iceland's president to submit a formal proposal for the dissolution of parliament, initiating the process for early elections. The forthcoming elections will seek to resolve the political impasse and establish a new government capable of addressing the pressing issues that led to the coalition's collapse.
