UNIFIL Reports Fifth Peacekeeper Wounded Amid Escalating Tensions in Lebanon

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) announced on Saturday that a peacekeeper was wounded by gunfire near the Israeli border, marking the fifth such incident in two days amid rising tensions in the region.

According to a statement from UNIFIL, the peacekeeper was injured at the mission’s headquarters in Naqoura. “Last night, a peacekeeper at UNIFIL’s headquarters was hit by gunfire due to ongoing military activity nearby,” the statement read. “We do not yet know the origin of the fire.” The injured peacekeeper is currently in stable condition.

This incident follows a series of escalations along the southern border of Lebanon, where clashes and exchanges of fire have intensified. UNIFIL has called for restraint from all parties and emphasized the importance of safeguarding the safety and security of peacekeeping personnel operating in the area.

UNIFIL, established in 1978, plays a critical role in maintaining peace and security along the Lebanese-Israeli border. The recent surge in hostilities raises concerns about the potential for further conflict in a region that has historically been volatile.

Local communities and international observers are urging for de-escalation to prevent further injuries and to maintain stability. The wounded peacekeepers serve as a stark reminder of the fragile peace and the risks faced by those working to uphold it.

UNIFIL continues to monitor the situation closely and remains committed to its mandate of supporting peace and security in southern Lebanon.
