KMT Chairwoman Cheng Stresses Cross-Strait Cooperation After Shanghai Visit

A Kuomintang (KMT) delegation led by Chairwoman Cheng Li-wun concluded a two-day visit to Shanghai this week, focusing on cultural, technological, and economic exchanges across the Taiwan Strait. The group arrived Wednesday and toured Shanghai's Yangshan Deepwater Port on Thursday – one of the world's busiest automated ports – as part of efforts to explore collaborative opportunities.

In a speech following the port visit, Cheng emphasized the potential for cross-strait cooperation: "Our shared cultural roots and complementary economic strengths create natural pathways for peaceful development. What we've seen here in Shanghai demonstrates the benefits of open communication and mutual understanding."

The visit comes amid increased economic integration between the Chinese mainland and Taiwan region, particularly in semiconductor manufacturing and green energy sectors. Analysts note that such exchanges have contributed to a 12% year-on-year increase in cross-strait trade volumes during Q1 2026.

While avoiding direct commentary on political matters, Cheng reaffirmed the KMT's longstanding commitment to maintaining stable cross-strait relations through people-to-people exchanges and economic collaboration.
