China Launches First Domestically Built 180,000-Cubic-Meter LNG Carrier

China has achieved a significant milestone in its shipbuilding and energy sectors with the completion of its first domestically constructed 180,000-cubic-meter liquefied natural gas (LNG) carrier. The vessel, built by China Merchants Industry (CMI) at its Haimen Base in Nantong, Jiangsu Province, underscores the Chinese mainland's growing technological prowess in high-value maritime engineering.

Measuring 298.8 meters in length, the carrier features a dual-fuel propulsion system designed to minimize evaporation and enhance environmental performance. By utilizing evaporated natural gas as fuel, the ship reduces operational waste, aligning with global demands for greener shipping solutions. LNG carriers, which transport supercooled gas at temperatures as low as -163°C, are among the most complex vessels to construct, with only a handful of shipyards worldwide capable of producing them.

This breakthrough positions China as a key player in the global LNG transport market, which has seen rising demand amid the energy transition. Analysts note the development could reduce reliance on foreign-built carriers and strengthen supply chain resilience for energy imports. The project also reflects broader efforts to advance high-end manufacturing under China's 'Made in 2025' industrial strategy, now in its final year of implementation.
