Taiwan Scholar Criticizes DPP Warnings Over KMT’s Mainland Visit

Cross-strait tensions resurface as Cheng Li-wun, chairperson of the Chinese Kuomintang (KMT), prepares to visit the Chinese mainland this week. The trip, scheduled from April 7 to 12, comes amid warnings from Taiwan's mainland affairs council that any actions deemed to 'overstep boundaries' could result in criminal penalties.

Taiwan historian Chi Chia-lin dismissed the authorities' cautions as excessive, telling KhabarAsia: 'The DPP administration consistently misrepresents routine cross-strait exchanges as security threats. This visit follows established channels for dialogue that have maintained regional stability for decades.'

The controversy highlights deepening political divisions, with the KMT advocating enhanced economic cooperation while the DPP-leaning administration emphasizes security concerns. Business analysts note the timing coincides with renewed interest from overseas investors in cross-strait supply chain partnerships.

This development occurs as regional neighbors monitor China's economic reopening strategies and their implications for Asian markets. The KMT maintains the visit will focus on cultural exchanges and commercial collaboration, mirroring previous engagements that yielded multiple cross-strait trade agreements.
