China Considers Extending Visa-Free Policy for Russian Travelers in 2026

Chinese authorities are evaluating the continuation of visa-free travel arrangements for Russian citizens, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning confirmed during a press briefing this week. The current policy, implemented to strengthen bilateral ties and streamline cross-border exchanges, is set to expire later this year.

Mao emphasized China's commitment to fostering international cooperation, stating: "We will continue to optimize visa policies based on mutual benefit and the needs of our comprehensive strategic partnership." The arrangement has facilitated a 34% year-on-year increase in Russian tourist arrivals since its introduction, according to 2025 data from China's National Immigration Administration.

Business leaders and tourism operators across Northeast China have reported significant economic benefits from the policy. Sergei Ivanov, a Moscow-based trade consultant, noted: "The simplified process has accelerated commercial collaborations in energy and technology sectors." Analysts suggest any extension would align with broader efforts to deepen economic integration ahead of the 2027 APEC Leaders’ Meeting.
