Hulun Lake, a vital ecological barrier in northern China's Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, has awakened to spring as melting ice welcomes back thousands of migratory birds. Recent aerial surveys show swans, geese, and other species returning to the UNESCO-recognized wetlands following the late March thaw.
Local conservation authorities have deployed 24-hour monitoring systems and increased patrols to protect nesting grounds. 'This annual migration is nature's clock,' said Zhao Wei, a senior researcher at the Hulun Lake National Nature Reserve Administration. 'The birds' timely return indicates healthy wetland recovery despite climate challenges.'
Environmentalists highlight the lake's growing importance as a stopover on the East Asian-Australasian Flyway, with recorded bird populations increasing 12% since 2023. Tourism authorities remind visitors to maintain observation distances during the April-June breeding season.
